Aspiring Professional Series: Maintaining Safe Ambient Air Levels During Site RemediationsDate: July 10, 2024
Moderator: TBD DO YOU know how to plan for acute human health exposure scenarios? Learn how to protect downwind communities from unacceptable and chronic exposure during the remediation of contaminated sites. In December 2023, the NJDEP released technical guidance on conducting perimeter air monitoring (PAM) to protect downwind communities from unacceptable acute and chronic exposure during the remediation of contaminated sites. Accordingly, the PAM guidance addresses both exposure scenarios. In this presentation, APs will gain an understanding of how acute exposure scenarios can be planned for, relative to projects in NJ. Other topics covered will include: applicable state and federal regulatory requirements; the distinction between air sampling and air monitoring; the elements of an air pathway analysis (APA) as developed by the U.S. EPA, and the need to perform them during the remedy-selection process; and the consequences of circumventing the APA process, as viewed through the lens of an infamous case study – Quanta Resources Superfund Site – with its attendant QA deficiencies. |
