Description:

On March 14, 2023, USEPA released a pre-publication version of a proposed rule which would establish National Primary Drinking Water Standards for six per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) – PFOA, PFOS, PFHxS, HFPO-DA, PFNA, and PFBS. The toxicological values used to support their derivation of chemical-specific Health Based Water Concentrations (HBWC), and USEPA’s novel approach of using a hazard index (HI) method for a proposed Safe Drinking Water Act National Primary Drinking Water Regulation (NPDWR), could have significant implications for NJDEP Programs: Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment, Safe Drinking Water and Science and Research Fish Consumption Advisories.

In this detailed overview, Kevin Long of Terraphase will provide an understanding of the methodologies and assumptions used by USEPA in developing their proposed NPDWR. He will also explore how USEPA’s approach could impact key aspects of these NJDEP program areas and divisions and outline the ramifications of these changes for LSRPs who are working to investigate and remediate contaminated sites. This includes those that may be impacted by specific discharges of PFAS from a specific site or due to diffuse PFAS originating from multiple known/potential sources.

The presentation will be followed by a moderated interactive open forum roundtable discussion. Please come prepared to discuss critical issues or concerns you feel directly impact your work.
