Description:

In this interactive event, Aspiring Professionals (and others) will learn firsthand about borehole geophysical logging, its role in the development and refinement of conceptual site models (CSMs), and the applications of geophysical logging tools. Instruction topics will include the structural and stratigraphic characterization of sedimentary bedding and tectonic fractures, and the analysis of borehole geometry and cross flows with respect to the physical nature of water-bearing features and zones.

The presentation will be followed by a field demonstration where state-of-the-art geophysical logging tools are deployed in an onsite well that penetrates sedimentary rocks of the Passaic Formation, a geologic unit that underlies many sites undergoing remediation in New Jersey. Key features of the Leaky, Multi-unit Aquifer System (LMAS) generic CSM described in NJDEP groundwater guidance will be identified in real time at the wellsite, where attendees will have the opportunity to observe the log acquisition process, ask questions of the instructors, interact with Sponsors and Special Guests, and share their own experience. The field demonstration will highlight Princeton Geoscience’s unique field logging van (and learning environment) as it would be used during execution of a commercial geophysical logging project. The geophysical logging field demonstrations will be concurrent with a well-side dinner offered by Princeton Geoscience’s field logging technician and professional caterer, Matthew Venella.

Summit Drilling will have experienced professionals on-hand to discuss how geophysical logging (and other bedrock characterization tasks) can best be completed in tandem with drilling and well construction. Finally, S2C2 will exhibit their advanced Direct Sensing tools including Geoprobe’s Optical Image Profiler and Membrane interface Probe with Hydraulic Profiling Tool.  These tools provide high density geologic and/or contaminant distribution data in the overburden which is unsurpassed by traditional sampling methodologies.  .

About the Venue:

In 1949 a handful of farsighted community leaders joined forces to form the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, now known as The Watershed Institute. Concerned at the time about agricultural runoff, soil erosion, and stream sedimentation, the Watershed Association became central New Jersey’s first environmental group. Since that time, the focus of the organization has evolved. Today The Watershed Institute protects clean water and the environment through a combination of conservation, advocacy, science, and education. Thanks to the loyal support of their members and volunteers the Watershed Institute has grown into one of the largest and most respected watershed associations in the country.

The well that will be used during the field demonstration is part of a radial well network installed by the US Geological Survey in 1966, on what was then designated as the “New Land Research Reserve” portion of the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association property. Geophysical logging and aquifer testing performed at the wellfield by USGS and NJGS over the years has contributed significantly to the current understanding of hydrogeologic characteristics of the Passaic Formation. Dr. Herman and Mr. Fiore will be available to discuss some of the findings of those activities and their importance in the advancement of groundwater science in this important setting.
