The LSRPA’s Diversity Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Committee in July presented an introduction to environmental engineering and consulting to the Governor’s School of New Jersey in Engineering and Technology at Rutgers University and the Governor’s School of New Jersey Program in the Sciences at Drew University. The two programs bring together 144 of the smartest high school seniors in the state for a free month of studying science and engineering on a college campus.

Michelle Bouwman of the DEI Committee took the students through a case study of a typical remediation site, discussed the history of environmental contamination, and reviewed potential educational paths for environmental careers. The students and university staff were extremely interested in environmental topics and had hours of questions about the reality of working on environmental issues. The LSRPA looks forward to building relationships with these students and universities through future college outreach efforts and the LSRPA scholarship program.
